Jane Robertson was born on 14 Sep 1750 in Augusta County, Virginia, USA. She died on 13 Nov 1812 in Virginia, USA. She was buried in Augusta Old, Stone Pr. Church, Ft. Defiance, Virginia.
Thomas DAVIS was born in Sep 1796. He died on 11 Aug 1863 in Picton, Ontario, Canada.
The information for this individual was obtained from a marble grave marker
found in the old Long Point School when it was being renovated. The marker had
been reversed and used as a plaque to identify the school. (Picton Gazette
dated August 1, 1990).Who is this Thomas Davis (1796-1863)? Could he be an ancestor of George Evans
Davis (RIN #1) and his family? Might he be a candidate for the father of William
Davis (1831-1863).The old man must have passed away while the family was enroute from Ireland
to some destination in Ontario, possibly the Elgin-Lansdowne area as it was
being settled about this time. The grave marker must have been ordered but never
claimed by the roving family. Another possibility is that the stome was ordered
from Young Township where the Davis's lived but never picked up for some unknown
reason.A Thomas DAVIS was found in the 1848 census for Yonge Twp. in Leeds County. He
was a farmer and head of a family living on lot 19, concession 4. The family
consisted of 7 members: 2 were natives of Ireland and 5 were natives of Canada
of British origin. Six were of the Church of England faith and 1 was Wesleyan
Methodist. There were 3 males and 1 female in the 5 to 13 year age group; one
single male in the 14 to 17 year age group; one married male in the 40 to 59
year age group; and one married female in the 14 to 44 year age group.Thomas, who would be 52 years old at the time of the 1848 census, fits into
one of these age groups. Could the male in the 14 to 17 year age group be
William (1831-1863)(RIN #74) who at this time would be 17 years old?The 1861 census for Yonge Twp. lists:
Thomas DAVIS 58 years born Ireland.
Liza " 58 " " " .
Joseph " 23 " born Upper C.
Thomas " 21 " " " ".
George B. 18 " " " ".If William (1831-1863)(RIN #74) were part of this family he would be the eldest
son at 30 years of age. Since he married in 1855 he was listed as a separate
family (See 1861 census for Lansdowne Twp. in Leeds County). Including William
in this family accounts for all the family and ages listed in the 1848 census
with two exceptions: 1. the daughter is missing but she is old enough by 1861
to have married and left the family. 2. The age of Thomas (58 years) does not
agree with that on the Picton tomb stone. Two pssibilities for error exist
here: 1. The tomb stone engraver made a mistake which may explain why it was
abandoned. 2. the census taker could have mistakenly recorded the ages of
Thomas and Eliz as the same. One flaw in the above reasoning is that the 1848 census for Yonge shows a
Thomas DAVIS 2nd listed three names below the Thomas DAVIS in question. Is
this Thomas Davis 2nd a son. If so. then the above Thomas Davis age 58 years
with wife Eliza cannot be the same as they also have in their family a Thomas! These early census which donot include the names and ages of children are not
of much help in solving these problems.
