Obituary: ROBERT ORVILLE DIMMITT

AGENCY - Robert O. Dimmitt, 87, of 338 Farring-ton, Agency, died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2006 at home.

He was born Jan. 13, 1919 in Hawarden, Saskatchewan, Canada to Noble Orville and Mary J. Campbell Dimmitt. He married Marian Newquist June 16, 1946 in Ottumwa.

He served in World War II from April 9, 1941 to June 16, 1945. During his service time, he was involved in the invasion of North Africa at Algiers and was taken prisoner by the Germans in 1943 and released in 1945. He farmed in Wapello County from 1946 until moving into Agency in 1992.

He was a very active member of the Agency Methodist Church, served as Secretary, Treasurer and Vice-president of Wapello County Farm Bureau, was boys assistant 4-H Leader, member of Agency Lions Club and worked with Wapello County Historical Society where he served as President the year the society moved from Chester Avenue to the Burlington Depot.

Survivors include his wife, Marian of Agency; a son, Wendell (Becky) Dimmitt of Ottumwa; a daughter, Marilyn (Jack) Gregory of Independence, Kan.; two granddaughters, Anna and Elizabeth Gregory; two brothers, Kenneth of Texas and Colin of California and two sisters, Ethel Jean Mullen of Des Moines and Helen "Judy" Watters of California.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Margaret Dimmitt; two brothers, Wayne and Stanley and a granddaughter, Paige Dimmitt.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 2, 2007 at the Agency Methodist Church with Pastor Bob Dvorak officiating. Burial will be in Agency Cemetery with O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion service.

Open visitation begins 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 1, 2007 at Robertson-Jay Funeral Home with family present from 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Wapello County Historical Society or Agency Methodist Church.

AGENCY - Marian L. Dimmitt, 89 yrs., of 338 Farrington, died at 4:50 a.m. May 3,2010, at Ottumwa Regional Health Center following a stoke suffered on April 24, 2010.

Marian Luella Newquist was born Jan. 23, 1921, the second child of Albert E. and Ethel F. Nye Newquist on a farm south of Eddyville. She attended Piper School in Columbia Township until the family moved to a farm southeast of Agency in 1929, where she attended Union School in Washington Township. She graduated from Agency High School in 1939 and attended Ottumwa Heights College before receiving her Standard Elementary Teacher's Certificate in 1941. She taught two years in West Chester, one year in Eddyville and two years in Ottumwa before marrying Robert O. Dimmitt on June 16, 1946, at the First Methodist Church in Ottumwa.

Robert and Marian farmed in Wapello County for 46 years. They purchased a farm in Pleasant Township in 1959, and they retired and moved to Agency in 1992. Robert preceded Marian in death on Dec. 28, 2006.

Marian was a member of Agency United Methodist Church and of the United Methodist Women. She was historian for the church when the congregation celebrated its 150th anniversary. She was also a member of the Wapello County Farm Bureau Women and of a Pleasant Township neighborhood group. Marian and Robert worked for the organization of the Cardinal School District and volunteered at the Wapello County Historical Museum.

Marian is survived by her son Wendell and his wife Becky of rural Ottumwa; by a daughter Marilyn Gregory and her husband Jack of Independence, Kan.; by two granddaughters, Anna Gregory of Princeton, N.J., and Elizabeth Gregory of Honolulu, Hawaii; and by a brother, Philip Newquist of Agency.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leland Newquist; a sister, Catherine Newquist; and an infant granddaughter, Paige Davis Dimmitt.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Agency United Methodist Church with Rev. Arley Ellingson officiating. Burial will be in the Agency Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reece Funeral Home with the family present from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the Agency United Methodist Church or Hospice, P.O. He was born March 8, 1922 in Canada to Noble and Mary Campbell Dimmitt.

He Married Ita Francine Stout April 30, 1954. She preceded him in death Jan. 13, 2003.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was a mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years, retiring in 1982. He had lived in California before moving to Ottumwa in 1982, and then moved to Hew Mexico in 2003.

Serving are two sons, Lee Dimmitt of Fairfield and Neil Dimmitt of Los Lunas, N.M; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two sister, Judy Watters of Fontana, Calif. and Jean Mullen of Des Moines; three brothers Robert Dimmitt of Agency, Kenneth Dimmitt of the state of Washington and Colin Dimmitt of Lancaster, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a great-granddaughter and a brother, Wayne Dimmitt. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, at Reece Funeral Home with Rev. Sue Babovec officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
