ROBERTSONS of STROME, ALBERTA

George Robertson [Parents] was born in 1798 in Adair County ?, Kentucky ?, USA. He died on 11 Dec 1862 in Wapello County, Iowa, USA. He was buried in 1862 in Kitterman, Cemetery, Wapello County, Iowa. He married Anna Kitterman on 3 Dec 1825 in Perry County, Indiana, USA.

Information from the notes of Joseph D.Robertson, census and cemetery records. See also "KITTERMAN KORNERS - 1998"; 13(2):11; 20-21.

Information from Virginia Owen Graham indicates that George Robertson and Anna Kitterman were married in Perry County, Indiana Dec. 3, 1825 and moved to Wapello County, Iowa in 1849.

The 1840 census for Perry County, Indiana lists a family of Geo. Robison:
1 male 10-15 years
1 male 40-50 "
1 female 5-10 "
1 female 40-50 "

The 1830 census for Perry County, Indiana list a family of George Robison:
1 male under 5 years
1 male 10-15 "
1 male 30-40 "
1 female 30-40 "

The first male in each census could have been son William b. 1827 making him 3 years old in 1830 and 13 years old in 1840.

The second male in the 1830 census may have been one of Anna's sons from an earlier marriage.

The older male in each census could have been George b. 1798 making him 32 years old in 1830 and 42 years old in 1840.

The first female in the 1840 census could have been Nancy b. 1831 making her 9 years old. She would not appear in the 1830 census.

The older female in each census could have been the wife (Anna KITTERMAN) B. 1787 making her 43 in 1830 and 53 in 1840. These reported ages don't quite fit the facts but often ages were reported incorrectly in census returns for one reason or another.

A search of the Indiana and Kentucky census has failed to find a George
Robertson born around 1798.

His name was found in the July, 1860 census for Wapello County, Iowa. See notes under his son William.

George and Anna Robertson could not be found in the 1850 census for Wapello
County but a family by the name of George Robinson was found (family 776,
page 456). This listed: George 52 years. born in Tennessee; Anna 61 ? born in
Maryland; and 3 children all born in Indiana; William 22 years; Nancy 21
years, and Samuel 12 years. Many of these facts fit what is known about George and Anna Robertson and their family. Samuel in this family cannot be explained as he does not appear in other family records.

In the "History of Wapello County, Iowa; 1901" (see notes for George D.
Robertson) there is a reference about George Robertson which reads: "George Robertson, the grandfather of George D., lived in Illinois for a number of years, and removed to Iowa in 1843, where his death occurred in 1864."

A grave stone in the Kitterman Cemetery east of Ottumwa shows George's
death as December 11, 1862.

The biographical sketch of George's son William states that his father, (George) was a native of Kentucky.

Maybe a search should be made for a Robinson or Robison in Illinois and Tennessee!!

Maybe George was born in Tennessee in 1798, then moved to Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana (where he married Anna in Dec. 3, 1825), and finally to Iowa in 1843 where he died in 1862 !!!

******Check the 1856 Census for Iowa. It shows George as born in KY and his wife as Hannah ! (2010/02/21)

Anna Kitterman [Parents] was born on 3 Oct 1787 in Frederick County, Maryland, USA. She was christened on 11 Jun 1788 in St. Peter's, Luthern Church, Woodsboro, Maryland. She died on 4 Jun 1856 in Wapello County, Iowa, USA. She was buried in 1856 in Kitterman, Cemetery, Wapello County, Iowa. She married George Robertson on 3 Dec 1825 in Perry County, Indiana, USA.

Information from family records, the research of Joseph D. Robertson,
and the "Kitterman Sinew" by Virginia Shoemaker Perry - 1986.

According to information from Virginia Owen Graham: Anna's mother, Anna Danner Kitterman, was widowed in 1811 after which she moved from Franklin County, Virginia to Harrison County, Indiana in 1819 along with her 7 children.

According to records, George Robertson, 11 years younger than Anna, was her
second husdand.

A record of Anna and her family by her first husband was found in the 1820
census for Perry Count, Indiana, page 147. Anna was widowed by this time and
she is shown alone with her children. The entry shows one female in the age
group 26 and under 45 years; two males in the age group 10 and under 16 years; one male between 16 and 18 years; and one male in the age group 18 and under 26 years.

The stone marker on the graves of George and Anna Robertson in the Kitterman
cemetery east of Ottumwa shows the date of Anna's death as June 4, 1856 at the age of 69 years and 8 months.

Upon coming to Iowa they located in Jefferson County, whence they moved to Wapello, where the father died in January, 1876, aged 83 years and the mother in 1862, aged 62. Our subject removed with his parents into Highland Township, in 1844, and settle with them on section 31. He remained under the parental roof until 1874, and then became the owner of a tract of land on section 6, which he still occupies".

Further in this sketch of James (Jr.) the fine upbringing provided by his
parents, James and Matilda are reflected in the following comments: "Mr. Van
Winkle (Jr.) was the eighth of a family of 11 children, and in early life was
trained to those habits of industry and economy which have been the secret of
his later success. He has been prominent in the affairs of this township for
many years, is warmly interested in educational matters, has held the various
school offices, and is consulted on matters pertainng to the general welfare of his community. He and Mrs. V. are members of the Missionary Baptist Church."
