Very little is known of Dorothy. However, in a book "The Leonards and Related
Families" by Clark M. Leonard as abstracted by David Leebrick, it is stated that she married three times. Her first husband was James VAN WINKLE. They must have lived in Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania as James was shown on the Tax Lists in that County in 1785, a year before he died. She then married Benjamin Van Horn and later, after his death, John Davis. John and Doroty moved to Kentucky with four of her sons. She had seven children: five sons Joseph, Alexander, James, Moses, Aaron, and two daughters Anne and Mary.It is reported that Aaron was captured by the Indians. In Perrin's "History of Kentucky" John Davis is credited with being one of the earliest pioneers in Nelson County. He settled near New Haven when the country was still in the possession of the Indians.
Since Dorothy and James VAN WINKLE were still in Pennsylvania when James died, it follows that their son and our ancestor, Alexander, must have been born in that state.
