Christoph Ketteman [Parents] was born about 1732 in Germany. He died in Jun 1806 in Franklin County, Virginia, USA. He was buried in Franklin County, Virginia, USA. He married Christina -------- about 1755 in Montgomery Co., Maryland, USA.

The following is a summary of the material in Perry's history the "Kitterman
Sinew". See, also "Kitterman Korners" 13(1):28 and 13(2):21-22.

As with so many others of our ancesters, Christoph Ketteman fled Germany to
escape the wars which harassed the people of Central Europe during the 17th and 18th centries. He arrived in American at the port of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania aboard the ship "Patience" on Saturday, August 11, 1750 accompnied by his brothers Johann Georg, and Georg, and his sister Catherine. Young Georg was not 18 as yet and so he was not registered as a passenger on the "Patience".

Two years after landing in America, Christoph found land to his liking and on
May 20. 1752 he contracted to buy 246 acres in Montgomery County. Maryland.
Unfortunately the seller died before the deal was completed and Christoph had
to fight legal battles for the next 41 years to retain the land. In the end he was awarded 156 acres of the original 246 acres. This land was known as "Williams' Intention".

In 1761 Christoph purchased a piece of property called "Red Oak Hill" from a man named "Georg Kettemann". The identity of this man is still unknown. It was on this land that Christoph and Christina made their home and raised seven children: Maria, Catherina, Elizabeth, Susannah, Heinrick, Michael, and John Jacob.

Records show that a Christopher Kettleman of Frederich County, Maryland was naturalized on September 4, 1765. His nationality was given as German from St. Anne's Church (Liber/Folio DD-7,284).

Christoph served in the Colonial Militia under Captain John Middaugh. His
occupation was that of a "wheelwright", reparing wheels and wheeled vehicles.
Records show that he was paid "0.17.0" for services rendered on April 3, 1767. He was also a farmer.

He and his wife moved to Franklin County, Virginia in 1794 where he bought land on the Big Chestnut Creek. At this time he changed his name to Henry Kitterman (or more likely someone changed it for him as he could neither read nor write).

Christoph made out his will in March, 1805 and it was probated in July, 1806
in Franklin County, Virginia.

Both he and his wife were of the Lutherine faith and were active in the local
churches in both Maryland and Virginia.

Christina -------- was born about 1735. She died in Aug 1809 in Franklin County, Virginia, USA. She was buried in Franklin County, Virginia, USA. She married Christoph Ketteman about 1755 in Montgomery Co., Maryland, USA.

Information source: see notes under her husband, Christoph Ketteman.

Little is known of Christina. She must have married Christoph in Montgomery
County, Maryland as he purchased his first land there in 1752. According to
Perry they were married in 1755 and raised there family near Woodsboro,
Frederick County, Maryland, so it is possible they were married in Frederick
County.

She made out her will August 19, 1809 and this was probated in September 1809
so she must have anticipated death. She names five of her children as heirs:
Michael, John, Henry, Susanah (Fishburn), and Elizabeth (Ader).

They had the following children:

M i Heinrick (Henry) Jacob Ketteman

Phillip Danner.Phillip married Eve Kettemann.

Very little is known of the origin of Philip Danner and his Wife Eve
Kettemann.

Philip is mentioned several times in Perry's "Kitterman Sinew". He is
shown as a witness to the marriage of Henrich Kettemann & Anna Daner in the
Monocacy Church in Frederick County, Maryland on March 8, 1784. In the records
of the Luthern congregation of St. Peter's Church in Frederick County, Maryland
Phillip Zanner and wife eva (daughter of Henrch Kettemann are shown as parents
of Anna born Nov. 1766 and baptized June 11, 1788. Philip Danner sold land to
Henry Kitterman on April 2, 1787 according to the Land Records of Frederick
County, Maryland.

Eve Kettemann [Parents].Eve married Phillip Danner.

See Philip Danner (Rin #291).

There is some doubt about her parentage.

They had the following children:

  F i Anna Danner

Heinrick Kettemann.

See note under Philip Danner (Rin #291) re the father of of his wife, Eva
Kettemann. There is as yet no other proof of the relationship.

He had the following children:

  M i Christoph Ketteman
  F ii Eve Kettemann

James Van Winkle [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 3 Jun 1790 in Nelson County, Kentucky, USA. He died on 22 Jan 1876 in Ottumwa, Iowa, USA. He was buried in Ottumwa Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa, USA. He married Elizabeth Deavers on 20 Jun 1813 in Hardin County, Kentucky.

Other marriages:
Henton, Matilda

Information from notes and records of J.D. Robertson (Rin #1).

James and his wife Matilda Henton (Hinton ?) moved from Nelson County, Kentucky to
Wappello County, Iowa in 1844. Here they settled on N.W. 1/4 of Section 31,
Highland Township. He built a two storey house of brick. This was razed in the summer of 1965.

James and Matilda were buried in a family plot just inside the second gate
off North Court Street.

James and Matilda were listed in the 1850 census for Wapello County (District
#13) in Iowa. Their surname was spelled as "Vanwinkle". James age was given as 60 years and Matilda's as 50 years. Six children were listed: Abraham age 19; Elizabeth age 16; James age 14; Nancy age 12; Sucy age 10; and Sarah age 4 years.

They are also shown in the 1860 census for Wapello County, Iowa with 4 of their children: James, 66 years from Kentucky; Matilda 60 years from Kentucky; James 22 years. Polly 20. Sucy Ann 18, and Sarah 14 years all from Indiana.

In the "Portrait and Biographical Album of Wapello County, Iowa", 1887 under
James H. Van Winkle (Jr.) there are some brief comments about his parents James and Matilda. "He (James, Jr.) was born in Perry County, Indiana, in 1835, and is the son of James and Matilda (Henton) Van Winkle who were both natives of Nelson County, Kentucky. Upon coming to Iowa they located in Jefferson County, whence they moved to Wapello, where the father died in January, 1876, aged 83 years and the mother in 1862, aged 62. Our subject removed with his parents into Highland Township, in 1844, and settle with them on section 31. He remained under the parental roof until 1874, and then became the owner of a tract of land on section 6, which he still occupies".

Further in this sketch of James (Jr.) the fine upbringing provided by his
parents, James and Matilda are reflected in the following comments: "Mr. Van
Winkle (Jr.) was the eighth of a family of 11 children, and in early life was
trained to those habits of industry and economy which have been the secret of
his later success. He has been prominent in the affairs of this township for
many years, is warmly interested in educational matters, has held the various
school offices, and is consulted on matters pertainng to the general welfare of his community. He and Mrs. V. are members of the Missionary Baptist Church."

Elizabeth Deavers was born in 1792. She died in 1822 in Perry County, Indiana. She married James Van Winkle on 20 Jun 1813 in Hardin County, Kentucky.

Information shared by Lucile Van Winkle Benefield in letter dated 2004/06/28.

Elizabeth was the first wife of James Van Winkle. They had four children.

They had the following children:

  M i Isaac Van Winkle
  M ii Thomas Van Winkle

Information is sketchy and comes from Virginia Owens Graham and Davis
Leebrick.

Phoebe Coy [Parents] was born about 1770 in Nelson County, Kentucky, USA. She died about 1847 in Perry County, Indiana, USA. She married Alexander Van Winkle on 12 Apr 1791 in Nelson County, Kentucky, USA.

See note for her husbaand Alexander Van Winkle (Rin #297).

Phoebe's marriage to Alexander was with the consent of her father John Coy.

http://awt.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=:2233602&id=I120777592

Dorothy Thomas [Parents] was born about 1748 in Litchfield, Connecticut. She died after 1800 in Of, Nelson, Kentucky. She married Jacobus "James" Van Winkle about 1765 in Of, Orange, New York, USA.

Other marriages:
Davis, John
Van Horn, Benjamin

Very little is known of Dorothy. However, in a book "The Leonards and Related
Families" by Clark M. Leonard as abstracted by David Leebrick, it is stated that she married three times. Her first husband was James VAN WINKLE. They must have lived in Nottingham Township, Washington County, Pennsylvania as James was shown on the Tax Lists in that County in 1785, a year before he died. She then married Benjamin Van Horn and later, after his death, John Davis. John and Doroty moved to Kentucky with four of her sons. She had seven children: five sons Joseph, Alexander, James, Moses, Aaron, and two daughters Anne and Mary.

It is reported that Aaron was captured by the Indians. In Perrin's "History of Kentucky" John Davis is credited with being one of the earliest pioneers in Nelson County. He settled near New Haven when the country was still in the possession of the Indians.

Since Dorothy and James VAN WINKLE were still in Pennsylvania when James died, it follows that their son and our ancestor, Alexander, must have been born in that state.

Was Dorothy a LEONARD? This is a topic for research.
