William M. Robertson [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 5 Feb 1827 in Perry County, Indiana, USA. He died on 23 Mar 1907 in Ottumwa, Iowa, USA. He was buried in 1907 in Ottumwa Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Elizabeth Van Winkle on 15 Jan 1854 in Wapello County, Iowa, USA.

From family records and research by Joseph D. Robertson. See also "KITTERMAN KORNERS - 1998"; 13(2):20-21.

William's name was found in the Wapello County, Iowa census for July 1860,
page 167, family # 1107. His age is reported as 30 years and his wife,
Elizabeth as 25 years. Three children are listed: George (our ancestor)
age 5 years; James age 3 years; and William (William Henry - known as Uncle
Henry in later years) age 1 year. Also shown is a elderly man George age
63 years. This gentleman is most likely William's father who married Anna. He
was a widower at this time as Anna had died in 1856. This record neatly ties
together three generations of Robertsons: George who married Anna Kittermen;
their son, William; and their grandson, George D.

In "The History of Wapello County, Iowa - 1878" there is a brief biographical
sketch of William Robertson:

"ROBERTSON, WILLIAM, Sec.29; P.O. Ottumwa; born in Perry Co., Ind., Feb. 5,
1827; came to Wapello Co. in 1847; Farmer and stock raiser. Married Elizabeth
Van Winkle; she was born in Perry Co., Ind., Feb.16, 1835; have seven children
-- George D.. James F., William H., Mary M., Isaac E., Emery M., and Thomas.
Mrs. Robertson is a member of the M.E. church. Owns 480 acres of land, valued
at $30 per acre."

There is an interesting record in the "Portrait and Biographical Album of
Wapello County, Iowa; published by Chapman Brothers, Chicago; 1887", which
reads:

"William Robertson, a highly respected resident of Highland Township, was born in Perry County, Ind, in 1827, and is a son of George and Annie (Ketterman) Robertson, natives respectively of Kentucky and Maryland. The former came to Wapello County in 1847, and located with his family on a tract of land in Highland Township. This consisted of 120 acres, and forms the present homestead of our subject, he having resided upon it continuously since that time. The father died in 1861.

"William Robertson and Miss Elizabeth Van Winkle, of Indiana, were united in
marriage in 1854, and became the parents of seven children, the record of whom is as follows: George D. lives in Highland Township on a farm; James F.
is also a resident of the same township; W.H. is engaged in farming on his
father's homestead; Mary Matilda became the wife of Lincoln Dimmitt; Isaac E., Emery, and Thomas are at home.

"Mr. Robertson has been greatly prospered in his farming pursuits, and added
to his original purchase until he is now the possessor of 643 acres, mostly
improved, and a large part under cultivation. His fine residence was erected at a cost of $3,000, and his barn of $1,000. The family is surrounded by all the comforts of life, and many of its luxuries, and both within and without the home gives evidence of cultivated tastes and ample means.

"In addition to the general routine of farming, Mr. Robertson has given
considerable attention to the breeding of fine stock, and has a herd of graded cattle which will compare with those of any other gentleman in the section. He commenced life a poor boy, at the foot of the ladder, and has climbed up to his present position solely by the exercise of his own industry and perserverance, and he has his reward in the profound respect and esteem of his fellow-citizens, and the competency which is the result of honest toil and wise management.

"Mr. Robertson is a Democrat in politics, and conscientiously casts his vote in support of the principles of his party. Since coming to this locality he has been prominent in the councils of his fellow-towns-men, and has been honored with various offices in their gift. Mrs. Robertson and Mary Matilda are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church; G.D., W.H., and I.E. are connected with the First Baptist Church of Ottumwa. The entire family is widely and favourably known throughout this section."

His obituary in the Ottumwa Courier of March 25, 1909 reads:

"HIGHLY RESPECTED PIONEER PASSES AWAY AT ADVANCED AGE. FUNERAL TODAY.

"William Robertson, one of Wapello county's pioneers passed away Saturday
evening at 5:40 o'clock at his residence, corner of Park avenue and
castle street, at the age of 78 years. He is survived by his wife, six sons,
and one daughter. The funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon
from the late residence, Rev. J.G. Barton officiating. Interment was made in
the Ottumwa Cemetery.

"William Robertson was born in Perry county, Indiana, 1829. In 1843 he removed to this state with his father, settling in Highland township, Wapello county, where he was engaged in genral farming for a number of years. For some years past he has been living a retired life in Ottumwa. Mr. Robertson was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Van Winkle and to this marriage was born seven children, all of them residing in this county. They are: George D., James F. Mrs. Mary Dimmitt, W.H. Robertson, I.E. Robertson, E.M. Robertson, and Thomas Robertson.

"Mr. Robertson has always been a progressive resident of the county, of strict integrity, and upright, honest character. His death is mourned by a large number of friends.

"Pallbears were A.C. Steck, Louis Goehring, W.M. Majors, George Kitterman,
Elias Kitterman, and J.R. Young".

From the notes of Joseph D. Robertson and family records.

Information: see note for Elizabeth Deavers (1792 - 1822).

There is a note of interest in the "History of Wapello County, Iowa - 1878"
about Alex, Van Winkle who may have been a half-brother of Elizabeth:

"VANWINKLE, ALEX, far., Sec.15: P.O. Dahlonega; born March 22, 1810, in Perry
Co., Ind.; came to Wapello Co. in 1850. Married Miss Martha Thompson in 1847;

was born in Harrison Co. N.Y. in 1820; They have two children -- John T., born
Feb. 27 1854, and Miles, born Sept, 27 1856, and two died -- Elizabeth M. and

Joseph Jacob Schertz [scrapbook] was born on 9 Jan 1812 in Alsace, France. He died on 9 Dec 1904 in Dahlonega, Wapello County, Iowa. He was buried on 11 Dec 1904 in Ottumwa Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa. He married Phoebe Philipina Ritter on 25 Jan 1857 in Fremont, Iowa.

Information source: Family records; Ritter History Book; Wapello County history books; and records of Virginia Owen Graham.

From the History of Wapello County - 1878:

"SCHERTZ, Joseph, farmer, Sec.4; P.O. Dahlonega; born in France Jan. 9, 1812; came to Wapello Co. in April, 1855; learned the trade of miller in Ohio, and worked at it twenty years. Married Miss Katherine Lowenberg; she died in 1856. Married again in 1858 to Miss Phebe Ritter; she was born in Germany March 6, 1838; they have ten children: George F., Philip, Katherine, Theresa, Matilda, Elizabeth, Phebe, Joseph, Louisa, Caroline, and Flora. Mrs. S is a member of the Presbyterian Church, and Mr. S is a Dunkard; Democrate."

From the History of Wapello County - 1901:

In an article about Samuel Dimmitt: "....August 29, 1890, was married to Louise Schertz. Her father, Joseph Schertz, came from Germany, and settled in Dahlonega township, Wapello county, in 1854. He still lives on the farm which he bought at the time, and owns 220 acres. He was born in 1812, and is still very vigorous, both mentally and physically. He married Phoebe Ritter, who was born in Germany, March 6, 1837. This couple were married since they settled in Iowa, and 13 children resulted from the union. Of these, they reared 11, namely: Philip; Catherine; Theresa; Tillie; Elizabeth, who died in 1895; Phoebe; Joseph; Louise; Caroline; Flora Belle; and June May."

There is a grave stone in the Dahlonega Cemetary which reads: "MARY K. SCHERTZ, WIFE OF JOSEPH SCHERTZ, Died 25 DEC. 1856, aged 31Y 4M 25D". This is most likely the marker for the first wife of Joseph. (Found by George W. Robertson and Marcella (Robertson) Williams in June 1991).

According to Aunt Ruth Robertson: Joseph and his first wife had one son, George.

There appears to be some question about the birth place of Joseph: whether France or Germany. According to history, Alsace was an area which was disputed by these two countries. The almost continuous war in the area was one of the main reasons why many people left to migrate to America. From about the middle of the 17th century to about the middle of the 19th century Alsace was ruled by France. In 1871, according to the Treaty of Frankfurt concluding the Franco-Prussian War, Alsace was annexed by Germany. The area was returned to France in 1919, after World War I, by the treaty of Versailles.

Joseph was born in 1812 while Alsace was still under the jurisdiction of France. Thus the Wapello County History written in 1878 is correct in saying the he was born in France. The authors of the Ritter Family History, written in 1905, and the History of Wapello County written in 1901 were apparently influenced by the then current jurisdiction of Alsace which was Germany.

There also appears to be some doubt about the year in which Joseph married
Phoebe (Phebe) Ritter. Joseph's first wife died 25 Dec. 1856 and he married Phoebe Philipina Ritter on 25 Jan. 1857. Their first child was born 22 Dec. 1857 (not in 1858 as stated in the Ritter Book: the second child was born 22 Feb. 1859 making the 1858 year impossible!). Thus the year of marriage is most likely 1857 as stated in the Ritter History Book.

There is also a question the number of children this couple had: the Ritter Book says 13 but only 12 were listed. The note in the 1878 Wapello County History shows a George F. as the eldest child; but no mention is made of him in the 1901 Wapello County History or the Ritter History of 1905. Could this have been the son by Joseph's first wife as mentioned by Aunt Ruth and could he have died at a young age??

Although born in Alsace when it was occupied by France, Joseph must have been of German stock and he must have spoken German: his surname suggests German; his religion was Dunkard; and he married a German girl within a few months after she arrived in America from Germany. Furthermore his daughter Matilda. my grandmother, spoke German.

Phoebe Philipina Ritter [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 6 Mar 1838 in Breunigweiler, Germany. She died on 15 May 1912 in Ottumwa, Iowa. She was buried in Ottumwa Cemetery, Ottumwa, Iowa. She married Joseph Jacob Schertz on 25 Jan 1857 in Fremont, Iowa.

"Mrs Schurtz was one of the best known pioneers of the county. She was born in Germany, March 6, 1838, and came to this country when 18 years of age. Since her marriage she has lived on the same farm where death claimed her. She has been a faithful member of the German Lutheran church all her life. Surviving are eight daughters, one son, four brothers and three sisters.
