- Canadian Census for Leeds Co. and Bruce Co., Ontario
- Family information
- Cemetery Records
- Registrar-Recorder of Los Angeles, California

When I first started work on the genealogy of my wife's family very little was known about the Davis line. Her father, George Evans Davis, told us very little about his family history other than that he was born in Wiarton, Ontario, that he had a twin brother named Alvan Earl, and that the name Davis was Welsh, implying that he was of Welsh descent. The names of his parents were known and that his mother, sister, and twin brother had moved to California after the death of his father.

My wife, Lucille, and I visited Wiarton for the first time in June 1981. At the City Municipal Office we consulted the cemetery records and found the location of the burial plot for Thomas George Davis and his wife Miriam, the parents of George Evans Davis. The records showed that he had died of diabetes. It was also record that Miriam had passed away in California and her remains had been brought to Wiarton by her daughter Marjory who had provided for perpetual care of her mother's and father's graves.

In December 1985 Lucille and I were in Los Angeles and took the opportunity to visit the Registrar-Recorder of Los Angeles County. There we found the death certificate for her grandmother Miriam Patience Estelle (Earl) Davis. The informer was Reginald Spear, son of Marjory, and grandson of Miriam. His address was given on the certificate so we looked him up and had an interesting visit with him. He told us a few additional facts about the Davis family that we didn't know: the Davis and Earl families came from Ireland and settled in Leeds county, Ontario; The Davis's settled near Lansdowne and the Earl's near Lyndhurst; the father of Thomas George died young and his widow, Eliza, married a John Steacy.

Now, armed with a good deal of solid information, we started searching census' and vital statistics' records in Ontario.

Thomas George Davis was only 3 years old in the earliest census records which listed his name in Lansdowne Twp., Leeds County, Ontario in 1861 (Reel #C1045, page 20). There he is shown with his father, William Davis, (29 years) and his mother, Eliza, (22 years).

Thomas George was only about 4 years when his father died. His mother remarried to a John Stacy (Steacy) about 1865. The 1871 census for Landsdowne Front in South Leeds Co. (Reel # C10,000, page 13) shows Thomas, age 12 years and a brother William, age 9 years, in the family consisting of their step-father, John Stacy, age 28 years, and their mother, Eliza, age 31 years and two younger children.

The 1881 census for the same region (reel # C13,232, page 65-66) lists Thomas G. Davis (age 22 years) and William Davis (age 18 years) in the family of John E. (age 41 years) and Eliza (age 42 years) Steacy along with 6 other children.

Shortly after this Thomas and William went to settle in Amabel Twp., Bruce Co. and in 1883 Thomas married Miriam P.E. Earl. The marriage certificate shows the wedding date as June 14, 1883.

This certificate contains a few gross errors. Although the bride's name and other information about her is correct, the bridegroom's name is given as 'Thomas Henry Davies'. However, it does confirm the names of his parents, viz. William and Eliza Davis (or 'Davies' as given on the certificate). One of the witnesses was Wm. Davies (Davis), more than likely his brother who had accompanied him to Bruce county. The certificate also confirms the birthplace of Thomas George as Lansdowne, Leeds County, Ontario.

The next record we have of Thomas George is in the 1891 census for North Bruce County, Amabel Township compiled in April (reel #C6328, page 4). Unfortunately, his wife's name is given incorrectly as ‘Mary Emma' but her age, 26 years, is correct as are the names and ages of the children, viz. Allen E. , 7 years, William R., 5, George Evans, 3, and Alvan Earl, 3 years. The census shows: that Thomas was 31 years of age, born in Ontario; his father was also born in Ontario; his religion was Church of England, and he was a farmer.

He is listed again in the 1901 census for North Bruce County, Amabel Township (page 9, line 11). Pertinent information concerning him includes: his birth date - Sept. 13, 1858; place of birth - Ontario; racial origin - Irish; nationality - Canadian; religion - Church of England; occupation - farmer; and he could read, write and speak English.

During one of the three trips which my wife and I took to the Wiarton area, we found copies of the WIARTON ECHO newspaper in the Museum at Southampton. While looking for the obituary of Thomas George we discovered some interesting facts about him. In the Jan. 3, 1907 Issue it was announced that Thos. G. Davis had been nominated for council in the Amabel Township. A week later (Jan. 10, 1907) the ECHO stated that "Thomas Davis and Mr. Eldridge are two excellent young men, intelligent, and up-to-date farmers and they are just the men needed for this work..... For Councillors, Davis (received) 241 (votes), Eldridge 218, .....".

But sad news was to come later in the spring. The May 2, 1907 issue of the Echo reported "Thos. Davis, one of the best known residents of Amabel and a Councillor for that Municipality has been lying at death's door for a few days. About a year ago he became afflicted with diabetes of a very malignant form. Besides being attended by a local physician he consulted a specialist, and has undergone a rigid discipline in his diet. On Tuesday of last week he was in town and was looking very well, but in some manner he contracted a cold and complications immediately set in. Everyone has anxiously inquired about him for he has been deservedly held in high esteem".

A week later the Echo reported "The funeral of Thomas G. Davis...took place on Sunday, and if proof were needed of the high esteem in which he had been held by all who knew him, it was amply in evidence that day. The procession was fully 1 1/4 miles in length, and included 125 conveyances. The whole country side turned out to pay their last respects to a good neighbor; the citizens of Wiarton, among whom he was well known and highly esteemed were there in large numbers; the Reeve of Amabel, the Clerk, the Treasurer, and Councillors were there....It was a fitting tribute to the memory of a man who had been regarded as strictly honorable in all his transactions. The chief mourners were his widow and three sons, one being in the west and unable to get home, and two brothers had come up from the east to attend his funeral. The late Mr. Davis was a comparatively young man, being only 48 years of age. He came to this part 25 years ago from Elgin, and settled where he had since lived when there were only two acres of land cleared. By hard work he became very comfortable and was one of the prosperous farmers of the township.... The service was conducted by the Rev. W. Henderson of Trinity Church, and after....the Masons took charge and went through their impressive service".

His tombstone in the Bayview Cemetery, Wiarton carries the inscription "Thomas G. Davis, 1858 - 1907".

Recently (July 2002), while browsing the internet the following historical item was found in the WEB PAGE of R.H.A. Steacy (2001/09/04): <www.Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site Genealogy Report Descendants of Matthew Steacy-10A.htm>

This information was obtained by Robert Steacy (1915) on a visit to Wiarton in 1982. "In the 1800's four young men from Lansdowne, namely: Evan Steacy, Brother George Steacy, sister Eliza Steacy's son THOMAS DAVIS, and a friend George Johnson set out for Wiarton, Ontario to farm, because the land there was new and undeveloped. Each obtained a tract of heavily wooded land and started to clear it out immediately with nothing less than an ax and a horse. The four built log cabins on their newly acquired land, and with this done returned to Leeds County to marry. Each one of the men married an Earl sister. Evan Steacy married Mary Esther Earl, George Steacy her sister, Nephew Thomas Davis, Minnie Earl and friend George Johnson married Louisa Earl. After marrying they returned to Wiarton to their new farms and log cabins, farming and raising a family. Evan farmed for many years. He passed away in 1927. Next in line for the farm was his son Richard Earl Steacy and present owner today 1982 is his son Evan Dunbar Steacy. The present farm is 1300 acres. Money for farm is derived from sale of beef cattle, a saw mill, harvesting Christmas trees, and the production of maple syrup. The rough wood from sawing logs is used to heat their large brick house and for fuel to boil down the maple sap. The farm is located near Georgian Bay."
These four young men must have gone to Wiarton just after 1880 as Thomas's obituary indicated that he had farmed in the Wiarton area for 25 years. He married Miriam Earl in 1883.

Miriam Patience Estella EARL [Parents] was born on 13 Jul 1864 in Lansdowne Twsp, Leeds County, Ontario, Canada. She died on 16 Dec 1959 in Santa Monica, California, U.S.A.. She was buried in 1959 in Bayview Cemetery, Wiarton, Ontario, Canada. She married Thomas George DAVIS on 14 Jun 1883 in Amabel Township, Bruce County, Ontario, Canada.

The first available record of Miriam is in the 1871 census for South Leeds County, Lansdowne Rear (Reel C10,001, page 38, lines 8-14) where she is listed with her parents, Allen and Rachael Earl, three sisters and one brother. Her age is given as 7 years. She was born in Ontario of Irish parents. She is recorded again in the 1881 census for the same area (Reel C13,232, page 2, family #6) along with her parents and one sister. The record shows that she was 16 years of age, born in Ontario of Irish parents who were farmers.

Miriam's marriage certificate, although containing several apparent errors, shows that she was married in Amabel Township, Bruce County on June 14, 1883 at the age of 18 years. It also shows her parents as Allan and Rachel Earl. Witnesses were: Wm. Davis, Lyndhurst and Maggie Sophia Seymour, Wiarton.

Her death certificate shows a great deal of information as provided by her grandson (Marjorie's son) Reginald Spear. Here her birth date is shown as July 13, 1862.

The census for 1871, 1881, 1891, and 1901 as well as her marriage certificate all confirm that she was born in 1864.

Her family moved from Leeds County to Bruce County about 1882 where she met and married Thomas George Davis in 1883.

After her husband's untimely death in 1907 she sold the family farm in Amabel Township and, along with three of her sons and her daughter, Marjorie, moved to Saskatchewan and, after a short stay there, she and Marjorie moved on to California where she settled in the Los Angeles area.

The Canadian Census for 1911 for Saskatoon, Saskatchewan lists her with three sons and a daughter. She is listed as Mary Davis, Head, age 46, born July 1864.
The children are: Reginald, age 24, born July 1886,occupation (ineligible);
George E. age 21, born Oct. 1889, occupation: Clerk;
Alvin age 21, born Oct. 1889, occupation: Book Keeper;
Marjorie age 15, born Feb.1893, occupation: Student.

She died of arteriosclerotic heart disease. She was cremated and her daughter, Marjorie, took her ashes back to Wiarton for burial near her husband's grave in the Bayview Cemetery. Marjorie also arranged for perpetual care of the burial site of her mother and father.

Miriam appears to have been nicknamed Minny according to notes received from Ian Roberts (July 2002).

They had the following children:
