Adam Petrie [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 15 Sep 1830 in Little Falls, New York. He died on 26 Sep 1894 in Thorp, Clark Co., Wisconsin. He was buried in Ashland, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Theda Moore on 2 Nov 1852 in Concord, Wisconsin, USA.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE also from correspondence and notes shared by William Robert Brittenham.
.
In her book, Hazel Patrick shows Adam's birthday as Sept. 13 whereas in the Petrie family Bible the date is shown as Sept.15.

Adam was one of seven children. His father died quite young. He, his mother,
and two brothers (Uriel and Jost D.) left Little Falls, New York and went to
Concord, Jefferson County, Wisconsin in September 1843. There he met his wife
Elizabeth T. Moore.

He was a soldier in the American Civil War with the 47th Regiment Wisconsin
Volunteer Company H. According to a note in the diary of Nathaniel Carpenter Ranson he enlisted in September 1864. Adam and Nathaniel were close friends as the latter mentions Adam several times in his diary. Adam did not leave home for army duty until Feb. 12, 1865 according to an entry in his diary by Elizabeth. There are a few references to N.C. Ranson, A.R. Ranson, and Mrs. Ranson in Adam's Diary particularly in connection with work and the exchange of money. Adam's Diary was given to me (GWR) by Billie Jensen (see next para. and note below)

A photograph of Adam and his wife, Elizabeth, was given to me by Billie, the wife of cousin Clayton Jensen, along with a diary, much of which appears to be written by Elizabeth. The photgraph is enclosed in a leather-bound folding case with two metal clasps. The child in the photo has not been identified.

The following obituary was brought to my attention by James Allen Kendall, found on the internet at URL:

Note: I have prepared a CD containing images from the Petrie Bible and Adam's Diary mentioned above and will gladly supply a copy to anyone interested.....GWR.

Elizabeth Theda Moore [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 29 Mar 1833 in Connecticut. She died on 27 Jul 1894 in Ashland, Wisconsin. She married Adam Petrie on 2 Nov 1852 in Concord, Wisconsin, USA.

Elizabth Theda MOORE is not shown in "Memories of Moores" but is mentioned in "The Mohawk Valley Petries..." . In the latter publication her middle initial is given as "J." but the inscription on her Tombstone clearly shows it as "T." On her marriage certificate, in the Petrie Family Bible, her name could easily be read as E.J. Moore. However, upon careful examination of the writing on the Certificate the script for her middle initial resembles more the script for the first letter of Thayer, one of the witnesses, than it does for the scrift for the first letter of Justice (of the Peace). Thus her middle initial has been accepted here as "T." Does this "T" stand for Theda, the Christian name of her mother?

The Marriage Certificate in the Petrie Family bible shows that Elizabeth and Adam were married
2 November 1852 by Larson A. Kellogg, Justice of the Peace, and witnessed by Luther Thayer and A. Kellogg. (See Note for her father Allen Moore).

An entry in the Bible shows her death as 28 July 1894.

A note in The Mohawk Valley Petries by Hazel Patrick gives her age at death as 61 years, 3 months, and 28 days which sets her death at July 27, 1894.

Her tombstone in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Ashland, Wis. shows her death as July 26, 1894. This same tombstone shows the death of her husband, Adam Petrie, as Sept. 27,1884. Could someone have interchanged the days by mistake during the preparation of the tombstone?

They had the following children:

  F ii Mary Edith Petrie
  F iii Annie Eleanor Petrie

DeWit Clinton Putnam was born in 1845 in Illinois. He married Louisa Alida Moore on 5 Aug 1926 in Santa Ana, California. The marriage ended in divorce.

Louisa Alida Moore [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 10 Apr 1854 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio. She died on 17 Aug 1938 in Northfield, Minnesota. She married DeWit Clinton Putnam on 5 Aug 1926 in Santa Ana, California. The marriage ended in divorce.

Petrie, George Walter

Family records.

Louise Alida MOORE was born in 1854. She usually went by her second name,
Alida. She moved with her parents from Ashtabula County, Ohio to Concord,
Wisconsin where she met and married George Walter PETRIE in 1875. Later they
moved to Fairmont, Minnesota where four daughters were born and raised.
A son, John, died at birth.

Later Alida and George were divorced and she moved to Long Beach, California.
She married DeWhit Clinton PUTNAM. Their marriage information is from a copy of their marriage certificate. They were also divorced.

After the second divorce Alida and her sister Nancy ran a small gift shop in Santa Ana, California
for several years. In her later years Alida moved to Northfield, Minnesota
where she lived in the Odd Fellows Retirement Home until her death in 1938.

A search of the internet at <Ancestry.com> found ALIDA PETRIE PUTNAM listed under both the Minnesota Death index, 1908-2002 and the Minnesota Cemetery Inscription Index. The latter gives her birth date as 10/APR/1854 and her death date as 17/AUG/1938. The place of death is given as Northfield Township in Rice County.

John James Moore [Parents] was born on 16 Mar 1826 in St. Lawrence, County, New York (Canada). He died on 27 Feb 1883 in Jefferson Co., Wisconsin. He married Luretta Rachel Hill on 19 Sep 1851 in Conneaut, Ohio, USA.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

John moved with his parents from his birth place in St. Lawrence County,
Canada to Ashtabula County, Ohio in 1831 at the age of five years. Later he
moved to Sullivan, Wisconsin where he worked as a farm hand for the next
four years. In 1851 he returned to Ohio where he married Luretta Hill. About
1854 they returned to the Sullivan area.

John homesteaded 80 acres and later purchased and additional 40 acres. He had
a sorghum mill on his farm which produce 2600 gallons of sorghum syrup annually
and a lime kiln from which he sold 2000 to 3000 bushels of lime per annum.
He must have been a good Republican as he served for many years as County
Assessor and County Treasurer.

John and Luretta had 11 children. He had a fatal stroke in 1904 and upon his
death left the farm to his wife and three living sons. In those days it was not
acceptable to leave land to daughters.

Luretta Rachel Hill [Parents] was born on 17 Nov 1831 in Conneaut, Ohio. She died on 27 Aug 1904 in Burt, Iowa. She married John James Moore on 19 Sep 1851 in Conneaut, Ohio, USA.

Information source - see George Walter Petrie (Rin #128).

Luretta moved with her husband from Conneaut, Ohio to Sullivan, Wisconsin
about 1854. There they had 11 children.

After her husband died she stayed on the farm for two years. Her oldest son,
Herbert, helped with the farm, the sorghum mill, and the lime kiln. They also
processed maple syrup and sugar. They raised sheep, spun their own yarn which
was knit into socks and possibly woven into cloth.

After they sold the farm Luretta and son Herbert went to Armstrong, Iowa
where Herbert purchased 80 acres and made a home for himself and his mother.
Later, in 1901, he built a large two story house which was used as a boarding
house. Luretta looked after the boarding house and cooked meals. Lumbermen and
school teachers often boarded there. From 1901 to 1904 Herbert ran the Post
Office and general store at Halfa, Iowa.

There is some question about the exact date of Luretta's death: Mable Leota Moore Huntsinger In "Memories of the Moores" shows the date as 20 Aug. 1904; Phillip Hoffman Walker in "The Family Tree of Mary Hoffman and Harry Walker" shows the date as 27 Aug. 1904; and Irving Leroy (Gus) Dehnert gave me notes that shows the date as 25 Aug. 1904. These need verification.
