ROBERTSONS of STROME, ALBERTA

Johan Jost (Joseph) Petrie General [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 3 Oct 1787 in German Flats, New York. He was christened on 14 Oct 1787 in German Flats, New York. He died on 31 Dec 1833 in Little Falls, New York. He was buried in Church Street, Cemetery, Little Falls, New York. He married Anna Eva Garter on 14 Jan 1816 in Fort Plain, New York.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

The sponsors at the baptism of Johan Jost PETRIE were his uncle and aunt: Johan Jost Dietrich PETRI (PETRIE) and Anna Eva (Bellinger) who were married 17 Jul 1787.

The Division of Military and Naval Affairs in Albany, N.Y. shows Jost Petrie
as serving as a Lieutenant in Captain Asa Chatfield's Company of Colonel
Christopher P. Bellinger's (Herkimer County) Regiment, New York State Militia, War of 1812, from May 11 to September 4, 1812. The regiment was in service at Sacketts Harbour.

Records of the State of New York, Minutes of the Council of Appointments show
the following appointments, all in the Herkimer County Regiment, for Jost
Petrie: Lieutenant in 1810; Captain in 1812; Major in 1817; and Lieutenant
Colonel in 1818. No further appointments are shown for Jost P. and the
Minutes end in 1821. Although no appointment to General has ever been found,
his and his wife's tombstones both give him the title of General. He made fast advancements during his relatively short life of 46 years!

Johan Jost is buried in the Church Street Cemetery, Little Falls, N.Y.
next to the graves of his parents.

I have the Oil Painting, about 9" by 11", which is mentioned on page 27 of The Mohawk Valley Petries and Allied Families. This was given to my mother, Elizabeth Petrie by her sister Olive Moore Petrie (Mrs. Edward Davern).

Anna Eva Garter [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 26 Mar 1798. She died on 4 May 1879 in Concord, Wisconsin. She was buried in Kellogg's, Corners Cemetery, Oconomowoc, Waukesha County. She married Johan Jost (Joseph) Petrie General on 14 Jan 1816 in Fort Plain, New York.

The wife of General Johan Jost Petrie is shown as Anna DeMuth in Hazel Parrick's book "The Mohawk Valley Petries and Allied Families". However, early search for her DeMuth parents has not been successful.

Thanks to the diligent research by James Allen Kendall and William Robert Brittenham, it has been determined that Anna's family name was GARTER. In their research they found documentary evidence for this in:

1. Baptism Records of the Reformed Church, Hekimer, N.Y.

2. Vosburgh, "Fort Plain Church Records, Town of Minden, Montgomery County, N.Y.

3. The 1860 Census for Jefferson Co. Wisconsin.

4. An Authentic Biography of Nathaniel Carpenter Ransom.

5. New York State DAR Volume 62 "Bible , Family, Church, and Cemetery Records. 1943-1946."

According to Volume 62 of the Daughters of the American Revolution of New York State, Anna had four sisters: Susan (married Nicholas Smith); Catherine (married Kiltz); Nancy ( m. John Nelson) and Delila (m. John Hoover) and five brothers: Adam. Henry, Robert, John, and David. It also states that Anna married a man by the name of Gould. No mention is made of Johan Jost Petrie.

After the death of her husband in 1833 Anna Eva Married James Gould in 1837 according to records of the Reformed Dutch Church, Herkimer, New York as found by William R. Brittenham. He also found a notice about the marriage in the Mohawk Courier, Little Falls, New York, 23 Feb. 1837

The DAR report also shows the parents of Anna as Hendrick Garter and Susanna Frank.

Thanks to Robert Brittenham and James Kendall for sharing the above information.

In Hazel Patrick's book "The Mohawk Valley Petries and Allied Families". The wife of General Jost Petrie is mistakenly given as Anna Demuth. It is also related that Anna with her family moved to Wisconsin in 1843 after her first husband's death in 1833. This does not seem likely as her Second husband didnot die until 1845. She and her family must have move to Wisconsin sometime after 1845.

Her gravestone in Kellogg's Corners Cemetery, Concord (according to Hazel Patrick's book) reads:

Anna, wife of Gen. Jost Petrie
died May 4th, 1879
age 81 yrs., 1 month, 8 days.

The accompanying photograph of the gravestone appears to have been reset as the age is no longer visible.

They had the following children:

F i Mary Katherine Petrie was born on 10 Sep 1816 in Little Falls, Herkimer Co., New York. She died on 16 Aug 1951 in Shelby Center, Orleans Co., New York.

Allen Moore was born in 1785 in Connecticut. He married Theda Garret on 9 Oct 1822 in New Hartford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

The following information was shared by James A. Kendall, Houston, Texas.

In the 1850 census for Concord, Wisconsin there are three Moores listed as living in the Austin Kellogg's boarding house:
Allen Moore, age 65, no occupation, born in Connecticut,
Theda Moore, age 55, born in Connecticut,
Elizabeth Moore, age 17, born in Connecticut.

He found the marriage of Allen Moore and Theda Garret in the Barbour Collection of Connecticut records. They were married 9 Oct. 1822 in New Hartford, Fairfield, Connecticut. (Barbour, vol.28,p..283).

He is continuing research on this family in order to confirm that this Elizabeth is the future wife of Adam Petrie and that Allen and Theda are her parents.

Theda Garret was born in 1795 in Connecticut. She married Allen Moore on 9 Oct 1822 in New Hartford, Fairfield, Connecticut.

See Notes for her husdand, Allen Moore.

They had the following children:

  F i Elizabeth Theda Moore

Johannes D.(Dieterich?) (John D.) Petrie [Parents] was born on 17 Feb 1765 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. He was christened on 27 May 1765 in Little Falls. He died on 11 Aug 1843 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. He was buried in Church Street, Cemetery, Little Falls, New York. He married Gertraud Charity G. Demuth on 26 Dec 1786 in German Flats, Herkimer, New York.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128). Also from
AFN:JOTF-JN.

Not much is known of Johannes D. Petrie. The sponsors at his baptism were
Johannas GLOCK and Catherine FLOTZ (both unmarried).

Gertraud Charity G. Demuth [Parents] was born on 15 Jan 1769. She died on 15 Mar 1855 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York. She was buried in Church Street, Cemetery, Little Falls, New York. She married Johannes D.(Dieterich?) (John D.) Petrie on 26 Dec 1786 in German Flats, Herkimer, New York.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128). Also from
AFN:JOWS-FV which shows her birth date as 19 Dec 1767 which does not
correspondwith her age at the date of death.

Little is known of Gertraud DeMUTH. She lived to the ripe old age of 86 years,
2 months.

They had the following children:

M i Johan Jost (Joseph) Petrie General

Hendrick Garter.Hendrick married Susanna Frank.

See notes for Anna Eva Garter.

Susanna Frank.Susanna married Hendrick Garter.

See notes for Anna Eva Garter.

They had the following children:

  F i Anna Eva Garter

Johann Dieterich Petri [Parents] was born estimated 1740 in German Flats, Herkimer County, New York. He died before 1770. He married Catherine Klock on 31 Mar 1761 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York, USA.

Information source - see George Walter Petrie (Rin #128).

Apparently there is no record of the date of birth ofJohann Dieterich P.
(I have estimated it at about 1740 - GWR).

It is believed that Johann Dieterich P. died before 1770 since a church paper
of his father, Johan Jost PETRI, dated Aug. 20, 1770 commanded the oldest son
(Johann Jost PETRI) of the deceased Johann Dieterich P. "when he comes to his
years" to give other writings and a new church be there erected to replace the one burned in 1757. The estate of Johann Dieterich P. was not settled until Feb. 20, 1787 when Johann Jost (or Joost D.) PETRI was appointed administrator at the age of 24 years.

Johann Dieterich PETRI and his wife Catherine KLOCK had three children, the
youngest being Johannes (John D.) Petrie (our ancester).

There is a suggestion that Johann Dieterich and his brother Johan Jost
(called Hanjost in the will) were twins as they are named together
in their father's will and in the deed for his land.

Note the change in spelling of PETRIE (PETRI).

Catherine Klock [Parents] was born about 1743 in Canajoharie, Herkimer County, New York. She married Johann Dieterich Petri on 31 Mar 1761 in Little Falls, Herkimer County, New York, USA.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

Very little is known of Catherine KLOCK. She was probably born within a year
or two of 1743 in Canajoharie down river a short distance from Little Falls.

They had the following children:

  M i Johannes D.(Dieterich?) (John D.) Petrie

George Demuth Capt. [Parents] was born about 1740 in Little Falls, Herkimer, New York. He died after 1788. He married Hannah Damewood about 1765.

Information from AFN:JOWS-BC.

There is some question about the birth place of George. According to
correspondence from Rose Marie Finter "a DAR application states (that Capt.
George Demuth was born on Long Island, N.Y.), but no proof has been found to
support this contention. He was in the Mohawk Valley at an early point as
Dietrich Demuth (his father) was one of the early patentees at Little Falls in the 1730s which precludes the Long Island birth location."

Hannah Damewood was born about 1744 in (Deerfield), Oneida, New York. She married George Demuth Capt. about 1765.

Information from AFN:JOWS-CJ. Her parents are unkown.

They had the following children:

  F i Gertraud Charity G. Demuth

Johan Jost Petri III [Parents] was born on 13 Oct 1689 in Strassburg, Alsace, France. He died in 1770 in German Flats, Herkimer County, New York. He married Cordelia Demuth in 1706 in Herddberg, (or Heidleberg), Germany.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

Johan Jost PETRI III (PETRY) sailed to America with his parents and his wife
in January 1910. Of 4000 persons who embarked from England, some 1700 perished crossing the Atlantic or soon after landing in June, including his father Johan Jost PETRY II. Most of the passengers were quarantined at Nutten's (now Governor's) Island until fall because of illness. They were then moved to camps on both sides of the Hudson River above Newburg.

It appears the Johan Jost PETRI II as the leader of the expedition to America
and when his father perished at sea, Johan Jost PETRI II became the leader.

Johan Jost P. and his mother Anna Gertraut (Gertruyd) PETRI are listed in
Governor Hunter's Ration Lists; also in the "Colonial Series" Vol. 1, page 443. Johan Jost is shown as being a soldier in Col. Francis Nickolson's
Expedition (English) against Canada (France) in 1711. He was raised to
rank of Captain prior to 1755; was captured by the French army in 1757 and
released a year later to Col. Schuyler. Its is ironical that the Huguenots,
who fled war and destruction in Alsace, France should have joined the British
in their wars with the French in North America.

In 1715 Johan Jost P. and several others moved to Schoharie Valley to settle on lands promised the Huguenots by Queen Anne of England. These lands were
not suitable for settlement and better lands were found in the Mohawk Valley.
Johan Jost along with some 93 other Huguenots (Palatines) were granted 100 acres each by what is known as the "Burnetsfield Patent" of April 30, 1725. Johan Jost received lot No. 8 on the north side of the river and his mother, Anna Gertruyd, recived lot No. 17 on Stone Ridge which became Herkimer Village. The court house now stands on that site. In 1740, 6000 acres, called Henderson's or Petrie's Purchase, was granted to John (Johan) Jost Petri and two others. This area was farther south, partly in the towns of Columbia and Warren in Herkimer County. Columbia Center was formerly Petrie's Corner.

Among the many activities of Johan Jost was portaging supplies for the
British army around the rapids at Little Falls and Canajoharie. These
supplies were on their way to the British port of Oswego. Several members
of his family worked for him in this undertaking and earned 9 pence perload
for a portage of about a mile.

A church of the "High Dutch Reform Church" was built of logs on a ridge on the south side of the river in 1730 on land donnated by Johan Jost. This was burned during an Indian attack in 1757. Upon instructions left in his will, the church was rebuilt of stone by the oldest son (his grandson) of the deceased Johann Dieterich Petri. This was completed sometime after 1787 when the grandson (Johann Jost or Joost D.), being of the age of majority, became the administrator of his grandfather's estate.

Johan Jost P. II helped found the settlements of Little Falls and Herkimer. It is said that he was the dominating spirit of the new settlements due to his natural leadership by right of his ability and education. His wife was
a women of culture and refinement. He was magistrate in German Flatts,
Herkimer County for a number of years.

It should be noted that, although these Huguenots and Palatines were from
Alsace in France, they were actually of German extraction and their mother
tongue was German.

In Henry Z. Jones book he shows that Johan Jost Petri was baptized on 13 Oct. 1689 which I have recorded as his birth date.

Cordelia Demuth [Parents] was born in 1690 in Germany. She married Johan Jost Petri III in 1706 in Herddberg, (or Heidleberg), Germany.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

Very little is known of Cordelia DeMUTH. Her father was Jacob DeMuth. She
married Johan Jost PETRI in 1706 at Herdberg (probably Heidleberg) where the
Huguenots stoppped for a few years as they fled the French armies from Alsace
down the Rhine to the Netherlands and eventually to England. It is not known
whether Cordelia was with the Huguenots as they fled or whether Johan Jost P.
met her along the way. Since several Petries married daughters of the DeMUTHS
it is quite likely that the DeMUTH families were fleeing with the Huguenots as were the Petries.

It was said the Cordelia was a woman of culture and refinement.

Further information from AFN:JLOP-81.

Cordelia had a brother, Dietrich DEMUTH who was also your ancestor.

They had the following children:

  M i Johann Dieterich Petri

Johannes Klock was born in Canajoharie, Herkimer County, New York, USA.

Information source - see George Walter Petrie (Rin #128).

Nothing is known of Johannes KLOCK except that he was from Canajoharie and the
father of the bride of Johannes Dieterich PETRI.

He had the following children:

  F i Catherine Klock

Johan Jost Petri II [Parents] was born on 28 Feb 1664 in Breitscheid, Germany. He died in 1710 in Aboard Ship. He married Anna Gertruyd Von Ringh in Alsace, France.

Information source - see George Walter PETRIE (Rin #128).

Johan Jost PETRI II was Protestant and as such was caught up in the religious
wars of Central Europe particularly in France and Germany. He lived in Alsace,
which belonged, alternately, to France and Germany. For many years this area had
been the center of political as well as religious wars. To avoid prosecution and
high taxes these Protestants, known as Huguenots, fled to the Rhine Valley
in 1685 and settled for a few years in an area known as the Palatinate. The
French army ravaged the area, destroying some 2000 villages and cities.
Hundreds died of starvation, cold, and nakedness. Survivors continued on down
the Rhine to the Netherlands and eventually to England. Apparently Johan Jost
PETRI I was the leader of this group.

In England the Huguenots and Palatines were befriended by Queen Anne but had
to become British Citizens. They were then sent to the New World where they
were given land grants.

Johan Jost PETRI II, his wife and family, including his son Johan Jost PETRI
III (our ancestor) lived in the Rhine Valley near Heidleberg for some 20 years
before going to England. They left England for America with an expedition of
Huguenots in 1711.

Johan Jost PETRI I died while crossing the Atlantic and was buried at sea.

Additional information was found in AFN:2RFL-D8.

Anna Gertruyd Von Ringh was born about 1664 in Alsace, France. She died in Herkimer County, New York. She married Johan Jost Petri II in Alsace, France.

Information source - see George Walter Petrie (Rin #128).

Little is known of Anna Gertruyd. Some say that she was of noble blood and
some researchers think she was a cousin of Queen Anne of England.

After her husband died at sea enroute to North America she remained a widow.
She was one of the Burnetsfield Patentees and received 87 acres of land,
lot #17, in what is now the town of Herkimer. She later gave most of the land
away but retained that on which now stands the Court House and the Reform
Church.

She had 3 known children: two sons Johan Jost (our ancestor) and Johan or John
Conrad PETRIE born in 1698; and possibly one daughter, Catherine PETRI who
married Johan Jost EIGHEIMER.

Anna Gertruyd appears to have been active in the community and became known
as the "the Mother of the Palatines".

Additional information from AFN:2RFJ-FF.

They had the following children:

M i Johan Jost Petri III

Jacob Demuth was born about 1657. He married Maria -------.

Information source - see George Walter Petrie (Rin #128).

It appears that Jacob was the father of two children both of whom are our ancesters: Cordelia, wife of Johan Jost PETRIE II our ancestor; and Dietrich DEMUTH who was the father of George. George had a daughter Gertraud who married Johannes PETRIE, grandson of Johan Jost PETRIE and Cordelia DEMUTH. Thus Jacob DEMUTH is our double ancestor.

The Ancestoral Records in the Family History Center, LDS show his son,
Deitrich DEMUTH, as being born in Germany (abt. 1696).

Maria ------- was born about 1650. She married Jacob Demuth.

Information from AFN:JOLP-9T which shows her as being born in Schoharie,
Herkimer, NY.

They had the following children:

  F i Cordelia Demuth
  M ii Dietrich Demuth
