John E. STEACY [Parents] was born on 10 Sep 1840 in Wilstead, Ontario. He died on 21 Oct 1918 in Gananoque, Ontario. He was buried in Cemetery North of Gananoque. He married Eliza STEACY about 1865.

John Stacey was listed in 1861 census for Lansdowne Twp. in Leeds Co., Ontario (reel # C1045, page 1) with his parents William and Sharlot Stacey and 8 brothers and 3 sisters. He was the eldest child and his age was given as 20 years.He and his wife, Eliza Steacy, were cousins as both had common grandparents, viz. Dennis Steacy and Elizabeth Graham.
He could not be found in the 1901 census for Leeds Co. Since he did not die until 1918 a further search should be made...................It is said that, although his grave marker is in the Union Cemetery, his body is not in that grave but is buried in the Protestant Cemetary North of Gananoque.

Eliza was born in Prescott, Ontario in 1838. It is said that, at age 15 (1857), she moved with her family to a farm at Greenfield, 1/2 mile east of Warburton, Ontario. (The discrepancy in dates and age needs to be investigated....)
In the notes for William Davis, the husband of Eliza, it was noted that she was named on the marriage certificate of their son Thomas George Davis.
The marriage of Eliza STACEY and William DAVIS is shown in County Marriage Registers of Ontario, Canada 1858-1869; Vol. 20: LEEDS & GRENVILLE; by Elizabeth Hancocks; 1987. This publication gives her maiden name, the names of her parents and the ages of both William and Eliza as well as the date of marriage. The names of William's parents are not recorded.
Further, it was noted that she was listed in the 1861 census for Lansdowne Twp., Leeds Co. along with her husband, William Davis and son Thomas age 3 years. In the 1871 census for the same area she was listed with her second husband, John E. Steacy, and her two children, Thomas age 12 years and William age 9 years, fathered by William Davis. The 1881 census for the same area for family #298 lists:

" William 18 " " " " " ""Eliza and John Steacy and their family were still in Lansdowne Front in 1891 as they were recorded in the census for that year. Eliza's son, Thomas George Davis, had left earlier for Amabel Twp. in Bruce Co. The whereabouts of his brother William at the time is uncertain.
A search of cemetery records in the library of the Brockville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Socety revealed the burial place of John E. Steacy and his wife Liza (DAVIS) Steacy. This was in the Union Cemetery (on Union Road) about five km. northeast of Lansdowne town. The Cemetery record shows: "John E. Steacy, 1840-1918: Eliza Steacy, relict of Wm. DAVIS, wife of John E. Steacy, 1838-1900".
These facts all help to verify the family story about an ancestor who died at a young age and that his wife remarried to a John Steacy. In fact Eliza Steacy and John E. Steacy were cousins; both had common grandparents; Denis Steacy and Elizabeth Graham.
George Evans DAVIS (b. 1887), in his application for life assurance dated Oct. 22, 1917 gave the age of his paternal grandmother (Eliza, not named) as 65 years which means she must have died about 1900 which agrees with the date given in the cemetery record.
Of interest is bit of family folklore relating that a Virginia Steacy, a descendant of John E. Steacy was a well known singer of the day and once performed for the Governor General of Canada. I have not been able to locate her and wonder if Victoria, Eliza and John's youngest daughter, could have been she?

brother of Allan Earl.His tombstone was discovered in a cemetery behind the Lyndhurst Anglican

Information from the publication: County Marriage Registers of Ontario, Canada, 1858-1869; Vol. 20; LEEDS & GRENVILLE; 1987 shows that William Davis and Eliza Steacy were from Lansdowne, and shows Eliza's parents as William and Ann. This must be a mistake as William's Eliza is too young, being born in 1852, whereas Eliza, the wife of William Davis, was born in 1838. Also Willliam Steacy's wife's name was Sharlot, not Ann. Ann was the name of the wife of Richard Steacy, William's brother. Therefore, this William is the uncle of Eliza (Steacy) Davis.
A search of the records of the Union Cemetery, 5 km. northeast of Lansdowne revealed only one William Steacy (33 names listed) of the correct age for this William. The grave stone shows his date of death as 28 April 1882 at the age of 73 yrs. 6 mos., & 5 days making his birth date as 23 Oct. 1808. His wife is shown as Jane McVeigh; died 29 Oct. 1877 at the age of 65 yrs. & 16 days making her birth date as 13 Oct. 1812. Jane must be William's second wife.
Charlotte ENNIS was born in 1821 in Ireland. She died in 1862. She married William STEACY about 1839.

William DAVIS [Parents] was born in 1862 in Lansdowne Twp., Leeds Co., Ontario, Canada. He married Alena Editha Ireland on 26 Dec 1883 in Eston Corners, Grenville.
A letter was found in the personal papers of Jeanne A. Sasseville, wife of George Evans Davis, from
some one who adressed her as "niece" and signed as "uncle Wm. Davis". This must have been this William, a younger brother of Thomas George. At the time (February 6, 1916) he was living in the C.P.R. Royal Alexandra Hotel in Winnipeg. He appeared to be doing a lot of travelling to places such as Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa and Edmonton. He spoke of Geo., Alvin, Mansell and Reg, (his nephews and all sons of Thomas George). He also spoke of visiting Prime Minister Borden.Other information by Robin (Spear) Gal (2007/05/03).
His marriage certificate shows that his profession was grocer.
Alena Editha Ireland [Parents] was born on 14 Oct 1863 in Wolford, Ontario. She died on 5 Sep 1918 in Easton's Corner, Leeds & Grenville Co., Ontario. She was buried in Wolford Cemetery. Leeds & Grenville Co.. She married William DAVIS on 26 Dec 1883 in Eston Corners, Grenville.

Peter DAVIS was born in 1796 in County Wexford, Ireland. He died on 10 Sep 1872 in Leeds County, Ontario, Canada. He married Martha ------- about 1830.
It was known that the father of Thomas George Davis, viz. William Davis,
was born in Upper Canada (Ontario) possibly in Leeds Co. The only
family that could be found in the 1851 census with a William Davis of the
appropriate age was that of Peter and Martha Davis in Elizabethtown Twp.
(reel # C11,733, page 190). The details of this family are listed as:Davis, Peter age 55 years; farmer; born in Ireland; Church of England.

c-1044, page 112). They lived in 1 1/2 story stone house built in 1832. Peter
had the initials J.P. after his name.Peter's death certificate No. 23437 shows his date of death and the cause, viz.
dyspoposia with which he suffered for 10 months. This cetificate also shows his
birthplace in Ireland, his age, occupation, and religion, all of which agree
with census records. The informent was Edward Davis, farmer, of Elizabethtown
(possibly the son, Edwin, and brother to William).Peter Davis and family were also shown on the 1842 Census for Johnstown
District, Elizabethtown Township, Canada West. No family names were given,
only Peter's. The report is very poor and it is difficult to determine the
number of children and their ages.Peter's will was found in the Registration Office, Brockville, Ontario
(Eliz-11-253. dated 30-09-1872). It was written in 1872 and names a son
WILLIAM. Your ancestor, William Davis died about 1863 and would not be named in
his father's will.Therefore, this PETER DAVIS and his som WILLIAM cannot be your ancestors!!!!
Martha ------- was born in 1795 in Ireland. She married Peter DAVIS about 1830.

Joseph owned a flax mill, by the River Slaney, in Boro Mills, County Wexford, not far from Enniscorthy. It was eventually distroyed by fire. His son, Dennis, worked in the mill
Joseph was made a Freeman of Enniscorthy in 1774.
He fathered seven children of which Dennis was the 4th born in 1779.
Anne.Anne married Joseph STEACY estimated 1752.
